CONQUEST Of HEAVEN.1976. Gouache, inks, enamels, pencil. 20X30 inches. The summer of 1976 was a coming out party artistically for me, in the last two years I had mostly worked in blank ink and rapidograph with ink color washes. I had started to dabble with airbrush mostly for backgrounds, commercially I was receiving commissions to do logos and promo flyers for the local bar bands , and since being a comic book artist was my passion I never looked beyond that. That all changed that spring as I bought a copy of VIEWS by Roger Dean and saw a clear path of how to do larger, more painterly work, add a healthy dose of Frank Frazzeta, Dali, Parrish and I was off to the races. This was one of my first attempts and remains one of my favourites, the inspiration came from listening to Tangerine Dream music, the Roger Dean influence taking center stage. I remember showing it to then Jasper Wrath member Jeff Canatta who was impressed and asked me if we can work together, I was in heaven although me and Jeff did not get around to working together until 1994!
